Finding the Courage to Make the Difficult Decisions

21st Annual National Principals Leadership Institute

2018 NPLI Finding the Courage to Make the Difficult Decisions

Saturday July 14 - Thursday July 19, 2018

With great frequency, leaders face dilemmas, challenging situations and what seems to be a set of equally poor choices.  These are the times when leadership shows its true colors, when decisions come with risk or unpopularity, when courage is essential. These are the moments when things are not “black or white” but varying degrees of “grey.” Or, are they?

NPLI 2018 will ask participants to reflect on difficult decisions they made in their professional and personal lives. What made those decisions difficult? How were the dilemmas resolved? Based on their experiences, can they share some advice?

The NPLI Process

We will look at how leaders from a range of disciplines took on the tough calls. As decision-makers, what attention did they pay to the demand for results, social and emotional growth, equity and social justice? Institute participants will return home with a set of understandings, insights, and skills that are inspirational, practical, and actionable.

Invited presenters include Stacy Alison, first American woman to climb Mt. Everest; Ras Baraka, Mayor, Newark, NJ; Katherine Bigelow, film director, Detroit; Marc Brackett, Director, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence; Ron Chernow, bestselling author of Hamilton and recently published, Grant; Dan Domenech, Executive Director, American Association of School Administrators (AASA); Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent, Dallas; Doris Kearns-Goodwin, historian (Team of Rivals); Karol Mason, first woman and the first African-American President of John Jay College; Robert Sapolsky, Behave, The Biology of Humans at Our Best & Worst; Theresa Weatherspoon, Director Player Development, NY Liberty, WNBA.
